Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Make sure that you hire someone with Insurance and Legal Copies of music. A professional membership like mine The American Assoc of Professional DJ's. A person that will work well with the photographer, family, and wedding Coordinator.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. An inside secret is to keep things simple and listen to people. I am successful because I can dance and be a part of the event. I believe anyone can play a song or talk on the mic but listening to the request of the Bride and Groom and keeping the Party going is the real secret.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I am great at listening and most people in the Industry want to tell you what you want. I take all of your input and combine it with my experience and create a unforgettable event. I don't have a God complex and I am very humble. I have Emcee Fashion Shows at the Avenues Mall and been on the Radio. I also used to teach Line dancing so I can lead a crowd if they dont know the dance to a song.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. I get to share my passion for music with people. I love dancing and seeing the smiles on peoples faces. I love the fact that I can be creative and have a good time at doing what I do best.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. Do you have a backup plan in case something happens. I partner with 6 other DJ's in Jacksonville to back me up in case of an Emergency. I can call them at a moments notice. I had a venue blow my speakers and I was able to go and borrow new ones in less than an hour. The venue told me they knew they had a problem but forgot to tell me!
Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?
A. I did a class reunion at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. I was playing the Cupid Shuffle and the hotel manager ask me to turn down the music at midnight because we had special guest staying nearby and they needed sleep. I assured the manager there was no problem and we would comply. I look up 5 minutes later and some big guys were being drug in by my wife. She runs up to me and said play the cupid shuffle again they were watching and wanted to dance. I replayed the song and they joined the crowd. It ended up being the visiting NFL Atlanta Falcons dancing with us.
Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
A. I spend hours putting together music and I spend thousands on lights and DJ equipment. I want the best so that if I was the customer all I would say was WOW!
Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?
A. I took Tv Production in High School. I did the sound at my Church growing up. I was working Security at a Club and the DJ quit one night and I was asked to grab some CDs and just finish the night. I was blown away at how great the response was. Fast Forward a few years I was helping the DJ at the club and he let me play for him while he ran a contest. I was asked to fill in when he left until they could find someone else. I went to another club and became the Friday Night DJ. The Club closed and Bourbon Street Station opened. They hired a DJ and he moved to Atlanta. I had so much experience at this time I took over full time. I worked it and worked the weekends doing Promotions for the Radio station. I finally convinced the program Director to let me be On Air. I got so many request for people from the club asking me to do their wedding I bought my own equipment. After more than 10 years of events and great Parties I am doing what I love Full Time.
Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.
A. Andrew Jackson All Class Reunion at the Prime Osbourne Convention Center
The Avenues Mall Spring Fashion Show. I emcee the event and provided music and entertainment after the show.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. American DJ Assoc DJ Times magazine. Billboard Charts.
Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?
A. I am doing more Voice work for customers and helping new artist Produce Demo CD's
